Making of Champions
National athletics team coach, Douglas Kalembo, asserts that Rhoda Njobvu's transition from the 400 metres to the 200 metres event is not solely attributed to her performance at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. In a surprising move, Njobvu participated in the 200 meters despite her previous training in the 400 metres event leading up to the championship. Despite this sudden shift, Kalembo explained that Njobvu's adaptability to changes and experience enabled her to handle the switch at short notice. Kalembo expressed confidence that Njobvu's performance was unaffected by the transition since she possesses familiarity with both events. Looking ahead, he emphasized the importance of collaboration to identify areas for improvement before the 2024 Paris Olympics. Former 400m world hurdles champion, Samuel Matete, weighed in on Njobvu's performance, highlighting the need for comprehensive efforts to nurture Zambian female athletes to reach a world-class level. Matete underscored the necessity of dedicated initiatives aimed at grooming young athletes who can make a significant impact on the global stage. This call for a concerted focus on grassroots development and talent cultivation aligns with the broader aspiration of producing competitive athletes on the international platform.
