On 28th September 2023, the government officially handed over a house to Muzala Samukonga after he won the 2022 Commonwealth Gold Medal in the men’s 400m race in Birmingham last year. Last month, Samukonga missed the Budapest feature of the World Athletics Championships, which was supposed to take place from 16th to 27th August, due to his knee injury. During the handover ceremony this morning, Zambia Athletic Association President Elias Mpondela highlighted the many achievements that Samukonga has scored and hopes that the house will serve as an example and a source of motivation to other athletes. "We saw the achievements made by Muzala and other athletes, including winning Gold medals in Birmingham last year and the Cape Caino FNB tour, and these have been a testament to what is coming ahead of us," Mpondela said. Minister of Sports and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, was honored to hand over the house a few minutes ago at Samukonga's new residence in Lilayi and has encouraged other athletes to continue working hard to win more for their country.
