Zambia's star runner, Muzala Samukonga, faces uncertainty in his participation in the upcoming World Athletics Championships due to a severe hamstring injury sustained during the Silesia Wanda Diamond League race in Poland. Samukonga's management has expressed concern over the lack of communication and support from the government of Zambia, particularly the Ministry of Sports, regarding his injuries. "Despite representing the country at the highest level of athletics, there has been no inquiry into his well-being or arrangements for treatment. This stands in stark contrast to the preferential treatment given to other sports, leaving us to question why athletes are not afforded the same consideration," Muzala's management has said. Part of the official press release reads: It is disappointing to witness other sportsmen and women receiving special attention, with technical teams readily available to assist when they get injured. In contrast, Muzala and his fellow athletes are left without any dedicated media or support personnel during their training camps. As we prepare for the World Championship, my primary concern is why the Ministry of Sports remains silent on Muzala's injuries and fails to address the disparities in treatment between different sports. The seriousness of Muzala's injury is undeniable, as his coach, Douglas Kalembo, confirms its severity. The hamstring injury suffered falls into a category that could take weeks or months to recover from fully. With the World Athletics Championships on the horizon, the uncertainty of his participation adds to the frustration. As he targets a gold medal in the 400m category, we hope for a swift and proper medical report to guide our decisions. The management calls upon the Ministry of Sports and the Zambian government to treat all sports equally and extend the same level of support and care to athletes regardless of their discipline. By fostering an environment of fairness and encouragement, we can further inspire our athletes to bring honor and glory to Zambia on the global stage.
