In a significant development, the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5, led by Chief Executive Officer Stanley Mutoya, has unveiled plans to designate the OYDC Zambia - Sports Development Centre as a satellite hub for the Podium Performance Programme. During a tour of the OYDC Zambia facilities on October 3rd, 2023, Mutoya expressed his delight in witnessing the continuous operation of the centre, eleven years after its successful hosting of the Zone 6 Games in 2012, now known as the AUSC Region 5 Games. Mutoya believes that making OYDC Zambia a 'Regional Centre' will significantly enhance the AUSC Region 5's efforts in preparing athletes for the upcoming Brisbane 2032 and Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. He elaborated on the tour's intentions, stating, "The tour intends to make OYDC Zambia one of our satellite Podium Performance Programme Centres. We will bring athletes from the region as we prepare for the road to Brisbane 2032. We have looked into several facilities, including the hockey, swimming pool, track and field, judo hall, basketball court, boxing & multipurpose halls, beach volleyball court, football pitch, and most importantly, the lodge that provides accommodation." In addition to this transformation, Mutoya emphasised the need to establish a Sports Science and Sports Medicine hub at OYDC Zambia to address scientific aspects such as athlete testing and measurements. This, he believes, will enhance the centre's competitiveness and global appeal. Mutoya expressed his optimism that by the end of 2024, these ambitious plans will come to fruition through the collaboration of various stakeholders, including the Government of the Republic of Zambia, the National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ), and OYDC Zambia. Joining the tour were notable figures including AUSC Region 5 Programmes Manager Sombwa Musunsa, AUSC Region 5 Personal Assistant to the CEO Nonofo Sepathla, Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Arts Registrar Sikota Mwanangombe, and members of the OYDC Zambia management team, among others.
