Born on 14th March 2003, Maria Lyamba's remarkable journey in rugby began in 2014 when, as a curious Grade 6 pupil, she stumbled upon the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC). On that fateful day, she found herself in the midst of other children watching strangers toss an oval-shaped ball around. Her inquisitiveness led her back the next day, and she eagerly joined in the fun. In 2018, after successfully passing her Grade 7 exams, Maria received a life-changing opportunity. The Mufulira Leopardess Rugby Club offered her a scholarship to play rugby and pursue her education in the border town. This marked the beginning of her rugby career, where she excelled as a scrum-half and flyhalf. Under the guidance of Coach Jeff at OYDC Rugby and later, Coach Moses Wesley Mulenga, Maria became an integral part of the Mufulira Leopardess and Zambia Rugby Women's National Team. She made her professional debuts in 2018, achieving victories and accolades along the way. Maria's trophy cabinet is brimming with victories, having won all local tournaments with her team. She also earned the title of Player of the Tournament in various prestigious events, including the Nchanga 10s, Muf 7s, Red Arrows 10s, Heroes 7s, and the Golden Lions Invitational Tournament. Despite facing doubts about her stature at the beginning of her rugby journey, Maria persevered. She worked tirelessly to prove her critics wrong, and her dedication has propelled her to her current status in the sport. Her ultimate goal is to help her club and country become dominant forces in Rugby Afrique - Women. Reflecting on her rugby experience, Maria emphasizes the valuable life lessons she has gained. Rugby has instilled in her a strong work ethic, a sense of teamwork, and the ability to prioritize effectively. It has also provided her with the opportunity to travel, meet people from diverse backgrounds, and forge lasting friendships. Maria's advice to fellow women rugby players is to pursue their passions with determination and caution, as life often offers no second chances.
