In the heart of the Resort City of Kariba, a new basketball phenomenon has emerged, derived from the mythical Nyami Nyami. Emanuel Joseph Kalikoka, a 23-year-old with a passion for the game, is the mastermind behind this transformation. Despite facing early setbacks in his own basketball journey due to a lack of support and resources, Emanuel's determination has prevailed. On January 19, 2023, he sowed the seeds of what is now the Basketball Bounce Academy, providing a home for 72 young talents divided into three age groups. His vision extends beyond the game; it's about keeping the youth away from the streets and shielding them from societal challenges such as substance abuse, prostitution, child marriages, and unplanned pregnancies. Emanuel's dedication is commendable, and he aspires to see the youth he mentors excel, even earning spots on national teams. He coaches underprivileged yet talented youngsters, both in basketball and academics, with a dream of securing scholarships to brighten their futures and those of their families. Beyond personal success, Emanuel aims to put Mashonaland West on the basketball map. He envisions a well-coordinated league and tournaments for the province, driven by his genuine love for the game. However, the lack of resources remains a formidable obstacle. The city's two basketball courts lack boards, and there is a shortage of equipment. Affiliation fees are unaffordable for the kids Emanuel cares for, all hailing from disadvantaged backgrounds. Despite these challenges, Emanuel runs the academy single-handedly and hopes to establish a board soon to enhance its operations.
