The Congolese soccer federation is taking to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) lifted a suspension on Morocco coach Walid Regragui. Regragui was initially banned for four games, with two suspended, for his role in a post-match melee between Morocco and Congo on January 21st. However, the CAF appeal board partially reversed the decision, allowing him to return for Morocco's last-16 clash with South Africa. Congo is furious with the decision, calling it "totally unjustified." In a statement, the federation said, "Footage of the disturbances leave no shadow of doubt" that Regragui was responsible for the incident. They also pointed to Regragui's "detailed confessions" as proof of his wrongdoing. The Moroccan federation, on the other hand, argued that the initial ban was an "unjust decision" as Regragui "did not commit any behavior that violates the spirit of sportsmanship." They argued that the coach was simply defending himself after being provoked by Congo captain Chancel Mbemba. The clash between Regragui and Mbemba began after their match ended 1-1. The exchange quickly escalated, leading to a brawl involving players and officials from both teams. Mbemba claimed Regragui insulted him, while the Moroccan coach denied any racist comments. The incident took a nasty turn when Mbemba's Instagram account was flooded with racist abuse, and Regragui reportedly received death threats. With Congo appealing to CAS, the saga between the two teams is far from over. The court's decision could have significant implications for both teams, not just in terms of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament, but also for future relations between the two nations.
