Ten young Zambian judokas who compete in the Teulings Youth Sports Challenge at the OYDC Zambia are set to travel to Ireland for an exchange program. The judokas representing the Sables Nua club in Kabwe Central province will be in Ireland for two weeks and while there will take part in several activities. Some of the activities will include, training sessions, visiting schools, talking about Zambia and demonstrating judo, visiting historical sites, meeting Shitra Shakanungu, former Zambian International judoka now resident in Ireland, participating in a tournament and taking part in the Coaching Course with Japanese Sensei Iura Sensei (8th Dan). Monday night, 24th April 2023, The judokas accompanied by judo national team coach Francis Moola Lipimile and other supporting members from Sables Nua, left for Ireland. Embassy of Ireland in Zambia Ambassador Bronagh Carr, during a send-off ceremony held at the embassy Monday afternoon, said Zambia shares a cordial relationship with Ireland and noted the increase of sportspersons from Zambia heading to Ireland for various competitions. Carr expressed happiness to see young sportspersons mainly those who used to be street kids now archive their dreams of becoming top sports person by dedicating their time to judo and taking part in local competitions and now heading to international events. And Judo Association of Zambia President Alfred Foloko who is also the National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) president disclosed that most of the judokas heading to Ireland are underprivileged and the association endeavors to bring happiness among them by engaging them in judo competitions such as the Ireland exchange program. ‘’Most of our athletes are coming from the underprivileged as you can see Sables Nua acts as a street kids center in Kabwe and for the kids to have the privilege to go and interact and exchange programs, ideas, and also culture with our colleagues from Ireland it is commendable for the Judo association. As the Olympic president, I would like to encourage other associations in the country to explore these opportunities and ensure that we expose our athletes to the international community’’ He said. Foloko further disclosed that he believes that the Judokas will have a different perspective after attending this program and WI come and benefit others.
