Zambia Hockey Association (ZHA) is set to compete in the men's and women's Olympic qualifiers in Pretoria, South Africa, from 29th October to 5th November. Both teams have been diligently training to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The ZHA executive has been working to ensure the success of the trip to South Africa, engaging with the government. Initially, the Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Arts pledged to cover accommodation, with ZHA covering transport, camping, competition kit, and other logistics. However, they have informed ZHA that they can only support transport, putting the Association in a difficult position as they have already secured transportation. According to ZHA, the National Sports Council of Zambia has not provided strategic support for critical events like Olympic Qualifiers, which should be a priority leading up to the Paris Games. The association urgently needs K460,000 to cover accommodation and food expenses for the two teams and officials during their 11-day stay. Failing to participate in the qualifiers would result in substantial fines and potential two-year bans from international engagements. Therefore, ZHA is making a distress call to the President of the Republic of Zambia and the corporate sector to assist in covering accommodation costs, enabling the teams to represent the country in the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifiers. This statement was issued by Hazel Kennedy, President of the Zambia Hockey Association.
