The reigning champions of the Zambia Basketball Federation, Munali Suns, have been placed in Group E of the Road to the Basketball Africa League Qualification Tournament, scheduled to take place from October 17 to 22, 2023, in Botswana. This tournament promises to be a thrilling showdown as teams in Group E share a history of intense rivalry marked by victories and defeats. While it will be Munali Suns' first appearance at the Road to BAL Tournament, the team boasts decent international basketball experience. Their journey began with a trip to Swaziland, now known as Eswatini, where they faced Zimbabwe's City Hornets in the semi-finals. At the inaugural Bravehearts International Tournament, Munali Suns secured the bronze medal. They further improved their performance by winning gold in the second edition of the Malawian international tournament. However, in the third edition, they were eliminated in the group stage. With the Botswana event on the horizon, Munali Suns have ramped up their preparations while maintaining their lead in the Midlands Basketball Association local league standings. Head Coach Conrad Musonda emphasized that the team will not underestimate any opponent and will prepare meticulously for the tournament, taking it one game at a time. Additionally, Coach Musonda hinted at potential squad enhancements on both the technical and player fronts, with more details to be revealed as preparations progress. Munali Suns currently hold a 1-0 head-to-head lead against the Dolphins, who are determined to swim past the Suns in the group stage. The Dolphins, accustomed to navigating hydro pressure, aim to demonstrate their resilience in the face of home court challenges. In a highly anticipated matchup, Munali Suns will face off against JBC, with both clubs seeking to claim bragging rights in their first-ever encounter. As Zambia and Zimbabwe share many significant elements, this game adds another dimension to their sporting rivalry.
