Ten countries are set to compete in the women's sevens Olympic pre-qualifiers in July in Lusaka next month. Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) president Chileshe Bweupe has said that the pre-qualifier will be used to market Zambia's tourism potential as means of promoting the economy. ZRU has unveiled a six-member local organizing committee (LOC) led by Chita Chibesakunda to spearhead the hosting of the event, which will run from 1st to 2nd July 2023 in Lusaka, Zambia. Algeria, Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mauritius, Senegal, Zimbabwe and hosts Zambia are expected countries for the tournament set for July this year. In an interview on Wednesday, ZRU said that the women's sevens Olympic pre-qualifiers are a big event, hence the union wants to attach a tag of 'visit Zambia' to help market the country's tourism potential alongside the Promotion of local sports. "This event is a big one and we are expecting 10 countries. It is a big event for Africa to showcase women's rugby, which has been going from strength to strength," Chileshe has said. We have come up with a budget of K2 million to host this event and the hosting rights have been given to Lusaka Rugby Club," Bweupe said. Bweupe, who has extended an olive branch to former ZRU president Clement Sinkamba to work with him in preparing the event, said looking at the magnitude of the event, Zambia is doing well to be at the center of hosting different events which will help the sports sector.
