The Zambia Wheelchair basketball team's assistant coach, Godfrey Sakala, emphasised the importance of the lessons learned during the recently concluded 2023 Paralympics African Championship held in Accra, Ghana. Zambia concluded the tournament with a closely contested 37-33 loss to Kenya. In a post-tournament interview, Sakala highlighted that both the team and the technical staff had gleaned crucial insights that would prove beneficial in future competitions. Throughout the championship, Zambia participated in six games, securing a solitary victory against the host nation, Ghana. However, they faced defeats against South Africa, Algeria, Morocco, DR Congo, and Kenya. Sakala acknowledged the team's struggles in key areas such as shooting accuracy and effective blocking of opponents. These aspects will be areas of focus for improvement in the team's future preparations. Additionally, Sakala pointed out a significant challenge the team faced: the quality of the wheelchairs used. The players found themselves at a disadvantage in terms of speed compared to their opponents due to the wheelchairs' quality. Therefore, efforts will be made to secure better-quality wheelchairs to avoid any restrictions on the team's performance. In closing, Sakala expressed optimism about the team's prospects, stating, "Next time we shall do better if we build from here and continue to work hard." These valuable lessons are expected to pave the way for an improved performance in future competitions.
