Munali Suns, the champions of the Zambia Basketball Federation, have been placed in Group E for the Road to the Basketball Africa League Qualifying Tournament scheduled from 17th to 22nd October 2023 in Botswana. In Group E of the Eastern Division, fans can expect intense matchups as these teams have a history of rivalry marked by shared victories and defeats. While this marks Munali Suns' debut in the Road to BAL Tournament, they bring solid international basketball experience to the table. The Suns made their first international appearance in Swaziland, now Eswatini, where they reached the semifinals but were defeated by Zimbabwe’s City Hornets. They later secured a bronze medal in the inaugural Bravehearts International Tournament by defeating their Zambian rivals, Hawks Basketball Club. The Suns continued to excel, winning gold in the second edition of the Malawian international tournament but faced elimination in the group stage during the third edition. They even hosted their own international tournament, earning bronze in the first edition but falling short in the second. As the Botswana tournament approaches, Suns Basketball Club is intensifying its preparations while maintaining a top position in the Midlands Basketball Association standings. Munali Suns' Head Coach, Conrad Musonda, emphasized the team's focus on not underestimating any opponent and taking it one game at a time. Additionally, the squad may see enhancements on both the technical and player sides as preparations progress. The Suns currently hold a 1-0 head-to-head advantage against Dolphins, who aim to advance past the group stage and prove their mettle on the international stage. Another formidable contender in Group E is Bravehearts, an eight-year-old team with an impressive record of 44 gold medals and 4 silver medals. Despite their relatively short history, they have gained recognition beyond Lake Malawi. Bravehearts won silver in the Munali Suns International Tournament in 2019, and they aim to secure gold this time, having narrowly missed it in the 2022 international tournament. Bravehearts also hold a 1-0 head-to-head lead against JBC and are eager to make history repeat itself. Head Coach Griffin Kalua expressed his team's readiness and the inclusion of players from Zimbabwe and South Africa once negotiations are finalized as part of their preparations.
