Malawi's women's national team, nicknamed the Scorchers, pulled off a shock victory over South Africa, the most successful team in the Cosafa Women's Championship, on Wednesday afternoon. The Scorchers, who entered the tournament following a 34-0 win over Seychelles in two friendlies last month, took the lead just 28 minutes into the game through Leticia ChiNyamula. South Africa equalised in the 45th minute through Thubelihle Shamase, but Malawi restored their lead before half-time through Temwa Chawinga. Chawinga completed her hat-trick in the second half with goals in the 64th and 76th minutes. It appeared that Malawi would secure a definitive victory, but South Africa managed to score two late goals in the 79th and 93rd minutes. However, it was too little too late as Malawi held on for a 4-3 victory. Malawi's win has propelled them to the top of Group A, with Eswatini in second place, Madagascar in third, and South Africa at the bottom. Defending champions Zambia will commence their campaign against Mozambique tomorrow, Thursday, 5th October.
