The National Chess Championship, scheduled to take place at Fairview Hotel in Lusaka from the 20th to the 22nd of October 2023, has attracted a group of determined players who are set on achieving victory. This highly anticipated event will bring together the national teams for both men and women, as well as the reigning 2022 national champions, in a battle of intellect and strategy. The men's category boasts an impressive lineup, including International Master (IM) Andrew Kayonde, IM Chitumbo Mwali (the 2022 national champion), Lemmy Chishala, Kaoma, Timothy Kabwe, and Justin Daka. On the women's side, Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Lubuuto Bwalya, Woman FIDE Master (WFM) Constance Mbatha, Portiah Mututubana, and Maria Banda are expected to compete for supremacy in this October edition. Maria Banda, one of the women participants, expressed her determination to win the title of National Champion, stating, "I am ready and looking forward to this month's Championship, and I hope to do my best. I know it won't be easy, but I will give it my all." With a range of prizes up for grabs, many chess players are preparing for the national championships, eager to showcase their skills and emerge as the victors. The Chess Federation of Zambia has stated that players will need to register for the tournament, with further details on fees to be announced soon.
