William Mwape, boasting a FIDE rating of 2161, was crowned as the champion of the 2023 Victoria Falls Open Sports Academy Inaugural Chess Championship. His stellar performance, accumulating 7.5 points and showcasing a tournament performance rating of 2284, solidified his victory. Mwape's journey to the title featured five wins, notable opponents included as Zed chess national team players Timothy Kabwe and Lemmy Chishala, CM Sibanda Kudakwase, Chivinde Dee, Kantalamba Mushota, and Moyo Kelvin. Fide Master Elect Geoffrey Luanja, while managing to salvage a draw, experienced his only setback with a loss against another national chess team player, Micheal Kaoma. The tournament showcased the talent of other Zambian participants, notably Micheal Kaoma, who secured the second position with 7.5 points, and Luanja Geoffrey, finishing in third place with an equal tally of 7.5 points.
