The Zambia Youth Under 20 Individual Chess Championship unfolded at Fairview Hotel in Lusaka from October 6th to 8th 2023, featuring two categories: the Open Section and the Girls' Section. This competition served as a platform for selecting the Youth National Team in preparation for upcoming events, including the Africa Junior and World Junior Chess Championships. In the Girls' Section, Victoria Mweetwa showcased her exceptional talent, securing a perfect score of 9 points out of 9 rounds. Victoria, representing Project Chess Zambia Academy, dominated her opponents with unwavering precision. Despite being the top seed and highest-rated player among the girls, Naomi Mwale of YOFOSO Chess Academy finished as the runner-up in the tournament. Namwali Alinaswe secured the 3rd position, while the promising young talent Margaret Bwalya, also from YOFOSO Academy, claimed the 4th spot. In the Open Section, Samuel Mumba, also known as CB1, emerged victorious with 7.5 points out of 9 rounds. His strong performance earned him the top spot, despite tying in points with Handiya Joseph of Kafue Chess Club. The computer tiebreaker ultimately placed Samuel at the forefront. Sharon Raphael, the top seed and highest-rated player in the Open Section, secured the 3rd position with 7 points. Sharon's patient playing style earned him praise from Mr. Aaron Banda, International Arbiter, who highlighted his impressive composure despite his youth. The remaining top positions in the Open Section were claimed by Mkandawire Samuel, Mofya Steven, and CM Kennedy Shane of YOFOSO Academy. Kennedy Shane's remarkable comeback, winning all six of his games despite missing the first three rounds, showcased his exceptional talent and dedication.
