Zambian chess maestro Chitumbo Mwali, known by his nickname 'Copper Eagle,' solidified his dominance in the national chess scene by securing his fourth consecutive national chess championship which took place at Lusaka's Fairview Hotel, where he triumphed over the six-time Zambian Chess Champion Andrew Kayonde. The chess gala kicked off with a fierce competition among the national team players and the reigning champion, all striving for national glory. Following intense battles, the Copper Eagle emerged as the victor. However, the newly introduced tournament format by the Chess Federation of Zambia required the top two participants to engage in two classical games. If no decisive outcome emerged, a blitzkrieg format would be implemented. Thus, Mwali found himself facing Kayonde once again. In the first classical game, Kayonde played with the white pieces while Mwali wielded the black pieces. Mwali, who had been on a winning streak for the past two years, demonstrated his skills by clinching victory in the endgame, inching closer to the championship. In the second game, he commenced with his signature 1.C4 move, and the pressure mounted on Kayonde, who needed a win to stay in contention. Yet, Mwali's unyielding play led to a draw, securing the title with a full point. The Copper Eagle soared higher, etching another glorious chapter in Zambian chess history. In the Ladies Section, Women FIDE Master Lubuuto Bwalya successfully defended her national title, while Samuel Mumba currently holds the junior chess championship in the country.
