Team Zambia has set off to represent the nation at the Trinbago 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, scheduled to take place in Trinidad and Tobago from 4th to 11th August 2023. The Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association of Zambia (NOCZ/CGA Zambia), Boniface Kambikambi, shared an update on the team's status. He revealed that a group of athletes and coaches from Athletics, Cycling, and members of the Games Management Team departed for the games this morning. "Around lunchtime, a swimmer and her coach also departed. We anticipate that by tomorrow, the other swimmer based in Germany will link up with the rest of the team in Amsterdam and proceed to Trinidad," he said. He added that the 2023 Youth Games will mark the first time Zambia has entered a youth athlete to compete in the 1500m long-distance running event, which is an opportunity to win a medal at these games. "We anticipate that the cyclists who are competing for the first time at the youth games will be able to reach the top bracket. These games are developmental, and we want the athletes to use them as a step to the senior Commonwealth Games in the future," he added. Secretary General Kambikambi extended his words of encouragement to the young athletes, urging them to embrace the experience wholeheartedly. He emphasized the importance of listening to their coaches, learning from fellow athletes, both on and off the field, and above all, savoring the joy of the games while maintaining the highest standards of behavior and discipline as they represent the country at the Games. Team Zambia's delegation for the Trinbago 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games consists of seven athletes: Joshua Mpaza, Luyando Gamela, Abraham Kaluba, Gift Puteho, Vanessa Matende, Jade Phiri, and Zach Moyo, who will compete across three sports codes: Athletics, Cycling, and Swimming. ALL THE BEST TEAM ZAMBIA.
