The blame game continues between Zambia Athletics and the Ministry of Sports regarding the delayed funds for the Ndola CAA Championships. Two months ago, Zambia hosted the Junior Athletics Championships in Ndola, attracting participants from more than eight countries. The event featured various categories such as the 100m and 200m races, Javelin throw, and more. Unfortunately, Zambia did not achieve notable success during the championship, failing to secure any gold medals. Instead, South Africa emerged as the dominant force, clinching the majority of the gold medals and leaving a significant mark. Regrettably, it has been over two months since the event took place, and approximately 70% of the athletes, as well as some volunteers, have yet to receive their participation and camping fees. This delay can be attributed to the ongoing blame game between the Ministry of Sports and the Athletic Association. The athletes expressed their frustration, stating, "We approached the Ministry of Sports, and they claimed to have already credited the accounts of the Zambia Athletics Association. However, we have not received any feedback to date." Responding to the situation, ZA president Mr. Elias Mpondela, during yesterday's intercompany relay press conference, disclosed to our reporter and acknowledged that the responsibility for the Ndola Athletics Junior Championship was with the Ministry of Sports, emphasizing the need for them to pay the athletes. He also mentioned that a meeting between the association and the ministry has been scheduled for a few days from now to resolve the issue. These recent events unfold after the Ministry of Sports released a press statement addressing associations that receive funds from international bodies and decide not to disclose them to the ministry. The statement served as a warning to associations that fail to openly declare the funds received from international bodies while seeking additional grants and support from the ministry. The upcoming meeting between Zambia Athletics and the Ministry of Sports raises hopes for a resolution to the ongoing differences. Athletes eagerly await a positive outcome, one that would ensure the fair disbursement of the funds they rightfully deserve.
