Maxwell Sichula, the pioneering black tennis player who broke barriers by playing alongside white counterparts to establish what is now known as the Zambia Tennis Association (ZTA), has issued a challenge to the management of Kantanshi Tennis Club. This challenge comes in light of the impressive results the club has achieved during recent tournaments. Founded by Sichula in 1968, Kantanshi Tennis Club has raised significant attention with its outstanding performance. Sichula, in his counsel to the club officials, emphasised the importance of proactive efforts in seeking corporate sponsorship. He urged them to engage the local business community in Mufulira, leveraging the goodwill and reputation the club has built over the years. Sichula stated, "The key is to approach corporate businesses because that's the most effective route. Mufulira boasts numerous businesses, and you should actively seek their support, especially given your remarkable results. Approach them and propose a partnership, requesting their financial backing for a year or two; that's the strategy – you have to be proactive." Furthermore, Sichula advised the club management to explore funding opportunities through ZTA. He highlighted that associations in good standing with the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) have the potential to secure financial assistance from their respective national associations. Sichula also noted that the government allocates funds through NSCZ to support clubs like Kantanshi. He explained, "Your avenue for support primarily lies with ZTA. According to the new Ministry of Sports and Arts, they are intended to receive government funding through NSCZ. Having served as the NSCZ chairperson for ten years, I can tell you that the government allocates a considerable amount through the council. While the lion's share usually goes to football, the principle is that all associations in good standing with NSCZ are eligible for funding. Therefore, your club can apply for the financial support you require from this source." Maxwell Sichula, a veteran sports administrator, not only blazed a trail as the first black President of the Zambia Lawn Tennis Association from 1973 to 1983 but also held the position of NSCZ Chairperson from 1982 to 1982. His experience and insights carry significant weight in advocating for the growth and development of tennis and sports clubs like Kantanshi.
