The Super Falcons of Nigeria put a smile on Africa's face on Thursday as they came from a goal down to beat World Cup co-host Australia 3-2. The match was played at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia, and it was a tightly contested affair. Australia took the lead in the first half through Emily Van Edmond, but Nigeria equalized just seconds before the breakthrough by Uchenna Kanu. In the second half, Nigeria took control of the match and scored two more goals through Osinachi Ohale and Asisat Oshoala. Oshoala came off the bench to score her goal in the 72nd minute. Australia managed to pull one back through Alanna Kennedy in the 100th minute, but it was too little, too late. Nigeria held on for the win, and they are now the first country from Africa to record a win at the 2023 Women's World Cup. The win means Nigeria goes top of Group B with four points, following their 1-1 draw against Canada in their opening match. Canada also has four points, but Nigeria has a better goal difference. The win for Nigeria is a major boost to their hopes of reaching the knockout stages. The Super Falcons will next face Ireland on Monday. Congratulations to Nigeria on their victory.
