International Master (IM) Gillan Bwalya drew his final round match against Zimbabwe's Fide Master (FM) Zhemba Jemusse to win silver at the 2023 Minerva Zimbabwe International Chess Open that was dominated by Zambians. The three-day competition which started on 26th to 28th May, was held in Harare and saw Zambian players get four positions out of the top five. Bwalya, who missed the first round, managed to register seven wins and a draw to finish the competition on 7.5 points with four other players including champion Jemusse. Jemusse emerged champion on superior tie breaks as Bwalya missed out on retaining his title due to an inferior tiebreak while third place went to Zambia's FM Douglas Munenga as FM Nase Lungu and Michael Kaoma finished in fourth and fifth places. Malawi's FM Joseph Mwale led five players that finished on seven points and among those was Zambia's FM Prince Mulenga, who was ranked eighth on tiebreakers after six wins, two draws, and a loss he suffered against Bwalya. FM-elect Geoffrey Luanja was 11th with 6.5 points and had the same number of points with compatriot Thomas Zulu placing 14th on the standings in the tournament that had 150 entries. In the ladies' section, Naomi Mwale was sixth with six points with three defeats denting her campaign. The majority of the categories were dominated by Zambian players including the opening Tournament where Zambia won all their games. Congratulations to Gillan and all Zambian players. #ZambiaKuchalo
