The government of Zambia has emphasized the significant role that the introduction of chess in correctional facilities and refugee camps will play in the country's social and economic development. Kangwa Chileshe, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Arts, expressed confidence that by implementing chess programs in these facilities, numerous lives will be positively transformed. During the launch event of Chess in Correctional Facilities at Mwembeshi Remand Correctional Center, Leslie Chikuse, President of the Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ), delivered a speech on behalf of the Permanent Secretary. Chikuse announced that all correctional facilities and refugee camps will be equipped with chess sets, facilitating the engagement of individuals in these settings. Chikuse further disclosed that to kickstart the initiative, five chess sets have already been donated to Mwembeshi, with plans for additional donations in the future. These contributions have been made possible through a partnership with Gift of Chess, a United Kingdom-based firm. Bwalya Kuyomba, Deputy Commissioner General of the Zambia Correctional Service, expressed satisfaction with the development, highlighting that each correctional facility in the country will receive five chess sets. This initiative not only brings the game of chess to individuals within these facilities but also provides an avenue for rehabilitation, skill-building, and personal growth. The government's focus on incorporating chess into correctional facilities and refugee camps underscores its commitment to fostering positive change and empowering individuals to thrive. By engaging in strategic partnerships and providing access to chess, the government aims to enhance social interactions, mental stimulation, and the acquisition of valuable skills that can contribute to the overall well-being and potential reintegration of individuals into society.
