Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ)President Leslie Chikuse says there is a need to double efforts to grow the sport in the country. Speaking at the press briefing organized by Universal Peace Federation in Lusaka on Tuesday, Chikuse said chess was one of the fastest-growing sports in the country but more is needed to be done to ensure that information spreads more quicker. "I am happy to collaborate with the Universal Peace Federation and this collaboration is important because chess plays an important role in the minds of the youth. In Zambia, chess is growing but we need to do more so that people can appreciate the beauty of the sport," He said. He said currently the federation was working in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Sports to ensure chess got included in the school curriculum as that would help kids to start the sport at a tender age. He further expressed happiness that the government had given tax exceptions to people intending to bring chess materials into the country, a demonstration of how the government remained committed to helping the sport grow. Chess coach Uwe Schneider said his mission to Zambia was to hold several training workshops for teachers so that they are equipped with the necessary information about chess. "I am working with the Ministry of Sport and Sunrise Africa Relief to help sponsor the purchase of chess sets to be donated to schools. I am an accredited teacher of chess and work with the Chess Federation of Germany. I am trying to promote the education of children in Africa, through schools and educational bodies," He said. Schneider said he wanted to bring an international perspective to the local scene and that the workshops would be held around the country to broaden attendance.
