Yesterday, Chess International Master (IM) Andrew Kayonde drew against fellow IM Adham Kandil sixth round to remain unbeaten at the ongoing 2023 Africa Individual Chess Championship in Egypt. With a record of three wins and three draws, the 4.5 points, Kayonde remains the only Zambian in line to win a medal at this African premium chess competition. Kayode was joined on 4.5 points by five players with the tiebreakers meaning the Zambian was in sixth position after the sixth round of games. The other five are GM Bilel Bellahcene of Algeria in fourth place, tournament seed-one GM Amin Bassem of Egypt sits fifth while GM Hesham Abdelrahman, who was Kayonde's opponent in the next game was placed seventh. Egyptian IM Ezat Mohamed was in the eighth position with his countrymate Kandil sitting in the ninth place. GM Adham Fawzy of Egypt was the sole lead on 5.5 points and had a half-a-point advantage over the pair of tournament favorite GM Ahmed Adly and GM Kenny Solomon of South Africa competing under the invitation of Africa Chess Confederation (ACC). In other results with the Zambian interest, Justin Daka forced a draw against IM Razik Khaled of Egypt to be positioned 31st on three points with Michael Kaoma and Lemmy Chishala sitting in positions 41 and 44. Chishala edged Candidate Master (CM) Elnasri Mohammed of Sudan while Kaoma was beaten by Namibia's Heskiel Ndahangwapo. The seventh-round pairings have brought out a Zambia v Egypt affair as it would be at the World Olympiads. With Kayonde facing Egypt's Hesham, Daka would be up against Fide Master (FM) Salah Yousry while Chishala and Kaoma had ties against Nehad Nyazi and FM David George- all of Egypt. In the lady's section, Women Fide Master (WFM) Constance Mbatha shocked Women International Master (WIM) Anzel Laubscher of Algeria to move to three points and into the 15th position on the log. Mbatha, the former Zambian ladies champion, was expected to face Mohamed Azzab, Mareim of Egypt who was also on three points in six attempts. Apart from the winners of each category receiving medals and titles, they would also be Africa's envoys at the next World Individual chess championships. Photo Credit-Chess In't
