Master (IM) Chitumbo Mwali scored an impressive seven points from a possible eight to bag the first edition of the Lusaka Province Chess Association (LPCA) 2023 Rapid Open Chess tournament held at the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA) main campus in Lusaka. On 16 April 2023, Mwali, who started the competition seeded second, picked five straight victories against Chileshe Nkandu, Candidate Master (CM) Kennedy Shane, Fide Master (FM) Nase Lungu, CM Godwin Phiri and Justin Daka. However, Mwali's flying start was brought to a shattering halt by fellow IM Andrew Kayonde with a defeat in the sixth round. But Mwali, known as 'Copper Eagle', immediately responded by defeating Jarmes Chibuye and Zambia Open and Closed Champion Richmond Phiri, also an IM, in the last two rounds to claim the title in the Open Section that had 42 elite entries. With seven wins and a loss, Mwali. of Red Arrows, accumulated seven points to be at par with Daka. Nevertheless, Mwali took the accolades on superior tie-breakers having beaten Daka in the fifth round. Daka, from Nkwazi.
