Chipolopolo national team coach Avram Grant has expressed his enthusiasm regarding the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Zambia has been placed in Group E, alongside Morocco, Tanzania, Congo Brazzaville, Niger, and Eritrea. Speaking from South Africa, Grant acknowledged the challenging nature of the draw, stating, "It's a very tough group." However, he emphasized that he has never sought an easy path in his career. Grant recognized Morocco as Africa's top team and anticipates a formidable challenge but also highlighted Zambia's recent victory against Ivory Coast, another strong opponent, in the AFCON qualifiers last month. Grant also welcomed the increased representation of African teams in the upcoming World Cup, as the number has expanded from 5 to 9. This development means heightened competition for qualification spots, a challenge that Grant embraces. However, the coach reiterated his call for improved football playing surfaces across Africa, specifically mentioning Zambia and Ghana as countries in need of raising their pitch standards. Grant also emphasized the importance of investing in coaches on the continent. He advocated for enhanced education and salary opportunities to elevate the coaching profession in Africa. As the former coach of the Ghana national team, Grant emphasized that Zambia will approach the upcoming tournaments, starting with the AFCON, step by step. He reassured that he is committed to accomplishing the task at hand but acknowledged the need to focus on one game at a time.
