Joseph Handiya is currently leading the Under 18 boys category at the ongoing Zambia schools and youth closed Chess championship which kicked off on Sunday, 30th April 2023. Handiya remains at the top from the previous 5 rounds and is closely followed by innocent Mano. Naomi Mwale is leading the Under 18 girls category, and Zangowana chipilwa is in second place. Championship Chief Arbiter Caroline Mbata has said that championship is taking shape and the participants are putting in their best. In an interview, Mbata said that young players of all age groups are showing the desire to win. Meanwhile, Chess Federation of Zambia member, David Kapembwa has said that the federation is closely monitoring the players as the country prepares for the All Africa games.
