Natalie Banda, a 16-year-old chess prodigy from Botswana, recently clinched the title of African U-16 girls' champion at the Youth Championship in Egypt. Notably, she also holds the 2023 National Champion title for all women in Botswana. Natalie is now set to represent Africa at the upcoming 2024 World Youth Chess Championships. "Although Motswana by nationality, as her name suggests, Natalie Banda has her roots in Zambia, as her late father was Zambian, while her ever-supportive mother, Portiah Banda, is from Botswana. Therefore, her success is always a success for Zambia too," Natalie's coach said. Natalie's father, Mr. Davies Banda, was a Zambian-born chess player who married a Motswana lady and settled in Botswana. He helped players from Zambia, as well as other stranded players from far and wide, in the interests of chess.
