Zambia is breaking new ground as it prepares to make history by fielding prisoners in an international chess competition set to unfold from October 3rd to 11th, 2023. This groundbreaking endeavor will see between five to eight inmates hailing from both Lusaka Central Prison and Mwembeshi Maximum Prison pitting their chess skills against global competitors. The event is the esteemed 3rd Intercontinental Chess Championships, which will be conducted entirely online. Notably, this marks the maiden occasion on which Zambia will be represented by a team of incarcerated individuals on the international chess stage. The Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ), in collaboration with Gift of Chess, is spearheading the selection process for the participants who will form the team. This initiative stems from the CFZ and Gift of Chess' earlier collaboration in July 2023 when they launched chess programs within select Zambian prisons.
