The 2023 IBCA World Individual Chess Championship for the Blind and Visually Impaired is set to take place on the Island of Rhodes, Greece, from 8th to 18th October 2023. This extraordinary event is a collaborative effort between the International Braille Chess Association (IBCA), the Hellenic Sports Federation for Persons with Disabilities, and the esteemed Chess Club "Ippotis." It promises to be a momentous occasion. Bringing together an impressive group of 80 players from 31 different countries, this championship will be a highlight of the World Chess Festival in Rhodes. The tournament will adhere to the official rules set forth by the IBCA and FIDE, embracing a nine-round Swiss system format, with a single round of exhilarating chess action played each day. What makes this event truly remarkable is the specialized equipment employed by visually impaired participants. Braille chess boards, tailored with ingenious modifications, facilitate gameplay for these dedicated competitors. Black squares are thoughtfully elevated by a few millimetres, providing tactile cues for easy differentiation. Each square is equipped with a central hole, ingeniously securing chess pieces in place with the aid of nails in their bases. This ingenious adaptation ensures that the competition remains accessible and fair for all. However, it is unclear yet if Zambia will be among the 31 countries to send delegates who will take part in this amazing and inclusive Championship, which is starting on the 8th of this month.
