Elvis Nkandu, the Minister of Youth, Sport, and Arts, has emphasized the importance of honesty when sports federations seek assistance for international engagements. In an interview, he expressed concerns that some federations misrepresent their intentions, making it seem like they are participating in international events when they are actually heading for friendlies. Nkandu underscored the need for associations to diversify their funding sources and reduce their dependence on government support. While the government remains committed to backing these associations, Nkandu urged them to explore alternative means of raising funds. For instance, the women's national soccer team recently traveled to Morocco for friendly matches. Nkandu pointed out that they had to secure funding for the trip themselves, demonstrating the importance of self-sufficiency for sports federations. The Copper Queens achieved impressive victories against Morocco, winning 2-0 and 6-2 in consecutive matches during their visit. Nkandu also expressed concern when teams are unable to participate in international competitions due to financial constraints. He stressed the importance of honesty among federations, especially when it comes to qualifiers, as resources should not be a limiting factor. The Minister emphasized that the government's support extends beyond football, mentioning instances like boxer Patrick Chinyemba receiving a £5,000 grant and the provision of a house to Muzala Samukonga by Heritage Home Construction. Nkandu highlighted that the government values all sports disciplines and is committed to their development.
