The Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ) is delighted to announce an exciting double-header event that will showcase the National Individual Chess Championships, encompassing the Senior National Chess Championship and the Under 20 Youth Chess Individual Championship. For the Senior Championship, participation is exclusively open to current national team players and the reigning champion from 2022. Conversely, the Youth National Championship is designed for the current 36 national team players and those aged 20 years or younger. The playing format will differ slightly between the two categories. In the Senior Championship, both the open and ladies divisions will compete in a Round Robin event. The eventual winners in each division will earn the prestigious titles of the 2023 National Champions. Meanwhile, the Youth Championship category will include a two-phase Swiss event. The initial phase consists of a 9 Round Swiss event, with the top 10 players, as determined by the final rankings, advancing to the final phase (Round Robin). Here, the overall winners, one boy and one girl, will be crowned National Youth Champions for 2023. These two Youth Champions will have the honor of representing Zambia at the 2023 Africa Junior Chess Championship, scheduled for the 4th of December 2023, in Mauritania. The Fairview Hotel will host this event from the 6th to the 8th of October 2023, and it will be FIDE rated with a time control of 60 minutes with an increment of 5 seconds.
