The Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ) has announced the Zambia National Individual Chess Championship, a remarkable double-header event encompassing the Senior National Chess Championship and the Under 20 Youth Chess Individual Championship. It will run from 6th to 8th October 2023, at Fairview Hotel, Lusaka. In this unique chess extravaganza, the Senior Championship is exclusively reserved for the reigning 2022 National team players and the current reigning champion. On the other hand, the Youth National Championship welcomes the current 36 National team players and aspiring talents aged 20 and below. The playing format distinguishes these championships. Senior teams in both open and ladies categories will engage in a Round Robin event, where the eventual 2023 National champions will be determined based on final rankings. Meanwhile, the youth championships will employ a two-phase Swiss event to crown the victors. The initial phase consists of a 9-round Swiss event, with the top 10 finishers advancing to the final phase, a Round Robin competition to declare the 2023 National Youth Champions. The two crowned Youth Champions (one boy and one girl) will proudly represent Zambia at the 2023 Africa Junior Chess Championship scheduled for Mauritania on 4th December 2023. Both championships are FIDE rated, with 9 rounds and a Swiss system in place. National team players can participate for free, while non-National team players will have an entry fee of K100. The time control for these intense battles is set at 60 minutes plus a 5-second increment, with games commencing at 10:00 hrs. Beyond the chessboard, stakes are high, as Africa Junior qualification is at play, with the top achievers receiving Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals, not to mention the coveted titles of National Champions. Moreover, the Senior teams in open and ladies categories have an added incentive as the top two players will earn the esteemed honor of representing Zambia at the All Africa Games in Ghana in March next year. Registration for the event closes on 30th September 2023.
