Zambia's emerging talent, Tumelo Lwenyeka, has made a remarkable start at the 2023 African Youth Chess Championship in Egypt, securing a perfect four points in the Under-10 boys' Open category. Lwenyeka's impressive journey began with a victory, and he continued to shine by defeating Christinaan Cronje of Namibia in the second round. He further demonstrated his prowess by edging out the Egyptian duo of Aly Ahmed and Moaz Oun in subsequent rounds. Starting the tournament ranked seventh, Lwenyeka currently leads the standings with four points as he heads into the fifth round, where he was paired against Egyptian player Adam Mohamed. Lwenyeka holds a half-point lead over both Mohamed and Omar Ahmed, both representing Egypt, who are tied with 3.5 points each. In other categories, Joseph Handiya has amassed two points in the Under-18 event, while Stephen Mofya remains at 1.5 points in the Under-16 Open. Joshua Sauti stands in fourth place with three points in the Under-12 category. The Under-12 category features a tie between Nathan Daniel and Ved Rao, both from Zambia, with one point each. In the Under-eight boys' event, Jacob Kapembwa ranks 22nd after securing a win, a draw, and two losses. In the Under-18 girls' section, Women Fide Master (WFM) Naomi Mwale has achieved two points. Women Candidate Master (WCM) Zangowanachipwila Nshikokola holds 1.5 points after recording a win, a draw, and two defeats. Namasiku Hambayi is ranked 13th in the girls under-16 category, boasting two points after two wins and two losses, while Victoria Mweetwa also has the same number of points in her under-14 category.
