Former United States of America-based tennis professional Hugo Mulenga Junior has challenged the two candidates for the presidency of the Zambia Tennis Association (ZTA) to clearly spell out their vision for improving the sport in the country ahead of tomorrow's election. The contenders for the top position in the ZTA are former player Lighton Musonda and businessman Celestine Mukandila. Speaking in an interview with the Times of Zambia yesterday, Mulenga, a USA-certified coach, emphasized the importance of a debate between the two candidates to inform the voters about their plans for the sport. Mulenga stated, "The delegates should vote for someone who will be transparent and accountable. It is important for the two candidates to debate so that clubs can assess them before the Saturday voting." He added that the debate would enable the delegates to evaluate and rate the candidates, noting that tennis has undergone significant changes and requires an energetic and welcoming leader. Mulenga, who has coached at prestigious clubs in the USA, believes that Zambia has the potential to produce top players who can compete at major international events like the French Open and Wimbledon. He also mentioned that there are well-wishers ready to assist in settling the $16,000 debt that the ZTA owes the International Tennis Federation once the association addresses its internal issues. In addition, Mulenga urged people in the diaspora to coordinate and work together rather than making individual donations of equipment and resources. He believes that by working collectively, they can more effectively promote tennis in the country. The upcoming elections were called in June after the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) dissolved the executive committee led by Gibson Phiri.
