Zambia is currently making history as it introduces prisoners to the world of international chess competition. The event is currently ongoing, taking place from October 3rd to 11th, 2023. A selected group of five to eight inmates hailing from Lusaka Central Prison and Mwembeshi Maximum Prison are actively participating in an online competition known as the 3rd Intercontinental Chess Championships. The Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ), in collaboration with Gift of Chess, has initiated the process of selecting the players who will represent Zambia in this unique endeavor. This marks a significant milestone as it signifies the very first Zambian team comprising incarcerated individuals to engage in international competition. The inception of this program occurred in July 2023 when CFZ and Gift of Chess introduced chess programs within select Zambian prisons. The initiative aims to provide inmates with an opportunity to engage in the intellectually stimulating world of chess, fostering skill development and rehabilitation.
