The Zambia Athletics (ZA) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) have apologized for the various hiccups that have characterized the hosting of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) 2023 Under 18 and 20 Championship at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. In an interview conducted on Monday, ZA president Elias Mpondela, who is also LOC chairperson, said at a press briefing held on Sunday night at Protea Hotel that the hosting of the CAA championship had been a learning curve and took full responsibility for the challenges that had been faced. With only a day left before the the tournament ends, ZA promised to immediately find solutions to the problems and do better. The track and field event had been hit with an accommodation crisis leading Ethiopian athletes to spend a night in the lobby at Garden Court Hotel on the day they arrived while the other major challenge was the electronic timing system. Three days into the tournament, no official results have been provided to the media and officials and this has proved a challenge to report accurate and efficient information on the event. On the accommodation failure, Mandela explained that the the championship had attracted an an unprecedented number of participants over 720 from 45 countries. He said most lodges in Ndola had a the capacity of 200-bed spaces when most countries have fielded an average of 100 athletes. "We made a firm decision to transition from Lusaka to Ndola and that posed a challenge on our planning," Mpondela added. Photo Credit-NOCZ
