The spotlight recently turned to Africa as the African Judo Union (AJU) orchestrated the highly anticipated African Senior Championships Individuals 2023 in the vibrant city of Casablanca, Morocco. This prestigious event stands as a center for Judokas from across the African continent, marking a crucial milestone in their quest for Olympic qualification. Amongst the remarkable scores achieved, Simon Zulu emerged as a legend, clinching the 3rd position and securing a spot at the prestigious 2024 Olympic Games by winning a bronze medal. Meanwhile, another exciting Zambian judoka, Steven Mangandu, exhibited an exceptional display, finishing in a commendable 5th position, and his qualification remains questionable. The International Judo Association has taken note of Zambia's good performance on the world stage, an accolade reflected in the country's remarkable 14th position in the World Medal table. This impressive ranking is a testament to Zambia's growing influence in the sport of judo, as showcased during the recent Judo Championship in Casablanca, Morocco. In the same development, the local judo scene is becoming interesting today, with over 30 passionate participants congregating for this week's MUSA Biscuits Judo Association League at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka. This league serves as an essential training ground, honing the skills of these dedicated judokas and preparing them for the upcoming tournaments on the continent. Zambia's judo legacy continues to ascend, both on the national and international stages.
