Elevating their commitment to environmental sustainability, the National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) launched a pivotal tree-planting endeavor. Guided by the leadership of NOCZ President Alfred Foloko, this initiative saw the active participation of key figures, including Dr. Fredrick Chitangala, Chief Executive Officer of OYD Zambia - Sports Development Centre; Mabvuto N’guni, General Secretary of the Judo Association of Zambia (JAZ); along with dedicated staff members from both NOCZ and JAZ. The initiative received valuable support from young leaders as well. In the aftermath of this impactful activity, Tinyiko L.K. Noombo, the manager of the OlympAfrica Centre, unveiled the broader context within which this undertaking transpired. She disclosed that the OlympAfrica Centre had been celebrating the OlympAfrica Youth Empowerment through Sport (O! Yes) program, an initiative proudly sponsored by the Olympafrica Foundation and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The culmination of this celebration was marked by the tree-planting initiative, which symbolized a tangible step towards environmental conservation. "The central objective of the tree-planting effort was to involve OYDC Zambia - Sports Development Centre and the Judo Association of Zambia in a sustainability project, geared towards addressing climate-related challenges. Our vision encompassed not only safeguarding our environment but also inspiring young leaders and the children who utilise the Centre, nurturing an ethos of environmental sustainability," Noombo articulated. Furthermore, she emphasized, "We extend our gratitude to President Alfred Foloko and Dr. Fredrick Chitangala, CEO of OYDC Zambia - Sports Development Centre, for their unwavering support. We persist in our mission to empower children through informative sessions and practical experiences in tree planting and fostering environmental sustainability." Simultaneously, Dr. Fredrick Chitangala, CEO of OYDC Zambia - Sports Development Centre, underscored the profound significance of this tree-planting venture as an enriching opportunity for the facility. "As a sports centre, we are committed to embellishing our surroundings with lush greenery. Sport plays a pivotal role in nurturing our environment." This significant tree-planting endeavor, which took place on 11th August 2023, aligns with the ongoing O! Yes program. The initiative will culminate in an O! Yes Day, a celebration scheduled for 15th August 2023, at the OlympAfrica Centre in Lusaka, where the spirit of empowerment and environmental stewardship will continue to flourish.
