The Cycling Association of Zambia has joined the global community in observing World Car-Free Day. This collective effort underscores the commitment of Lusaka City to address the pressing issue of air pollution and promote sustainable urban living. In a noteworthy collaboration with the Zambia Road Safety Trust, the Mayor of Lusaka has taken a significant step by temporarily closing sections of Tambo Mbeki and Nangwenya Roads in support of this initiative. This action aligns perfectly with the overarching goals of World Car-Free Day, which seeks to encourage alternative modes of transportation and raise awareness about the adverse effects of air pollution. Anticipating active participation from over 5,000 residents of Lusaka, this event promises to bring communities together and create safe play streets for children. It's an initiative that recognizes the numerous challenges posed by air pollution, prompting cities worldwide, including Lusaka, to take decisive action. In joining the ranks of cities such as Kigali and Addis Ababa, Lusaka reaffirms its commitment to combat congestion and foster safer walking and cycling in urban areas. During this commemoration, various sports will take center stage, promoting physical activity and alternative transportation modes. The event will feature activities such as aerobics, walking, cycling competitions, and even bicycle acrobatics. These sports symbolize the community's dedication to healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable mobility options, which play a pivotal role in improving urban environments and the overall quality of life.
